Want to get muddy but aren’t ready to commit to a 6 week course? Then come sip on some Mud Lite and try pottery in this one time wheel throwing class!
In this 2hr session you’ll learn the basics throwing by making a bowl on the wheel. No pottery experience is required, beginners welcome! We’ll guide you through the steps and do the dirty work with you; this class has been designed to trim the fat off of the process so you can keep it lite and just get muddy!
At the end of your session once your masterpiece of a bowl is made, you’ll choose your glaze colour and your instructor will finish the remainder of the process for you. All you have to do is pick it up!
**Take a look at the bottom of this page if you’re curious what happens to your work next**
We welcome singles, friends, or groups, but we cannot reserve spots and availability is subject to space/capacity of 8 people per class.
Please select the date that fits you best and be sure you can make it as these classes are NON REFUNDABLE, TRANSFERABLE OR EXCHANGEABLE.
All events/workshops/classes at mudlab are 18+
**What’s the process from raw clay to finished piece?
After the piece is thrown on the wheel it’s usually left to dry for 3-4 days but it can take up to a week+ depending on the piece
Once it’s at the perfect dryness (called leather hard), it goes back on the wheel to be trimmed by hand to add shape and remove any excess thickness so it doesn’t blow up in the kiln - yikes!!!
Your beautiful bowl will once again be left out to fully dry until it’s completely “bone dry” and will then be fired in the kiln for the first time. This is called a bisque firing and can reach temperatures of 2000F - HOTT!!
After the first firing is done and the piece is cooled, it will be dunked in your favourite glaze and then fired for a second time in a glaze firing - Also very freaking hot!!!
Once the kiln is cool and your piece can be touched.. IT’S DONE!!
Quite the process hey? Depending on a lot of factors this process can take up to two weeks or more, so please be patient while your instructor works hard to finish your piece for you. You’ll receive an email with pick up instructions once your bowl is ready to go!
If you’re interested in learning more about ceramics and how to make a piece from beginning to end, consider checking out our courses in the “Get Muddy” section of our website!
